I've isolated it to thewuauserv process through Resource Manager (100% CPU usage!) and have tried restarting and stopping it to no avail. Yes MS updates are dangerous and are to benefit MS only, specially the so frequent security updates which are pushed to secure MS not users. Although I know I'm not supposed to, I have several times just highlighted the offending svchost process and "stopped" it (sorry, I can't remember exact term). Processor it's around 0-10%. From my experience, the Svchost.exe high usage problems - in most cases - occur on computers that are infected by a virus or a malware program.
